Surabhi Theatre

Surabhi Theatre is a unique Telugu theatre tradition with a history spanning nearly 150 years. Most Surabhi plays draw from the great Indian epics and mythologies—the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata—brought to life through elaborate sets, colourful costumes, theatrical pyrotechnics, and spectacular storytelling.

The artists belong to large joint families and do almost everything themselves. Once an actor finishes playing a character, they may step backstage to take care of the lights, sets, props, or other technical work. Behind the curtains, the atmosphere is almost like a war situation—every cue and transition has to happen perfectly, with no room for error.
